MACHAME.
WHISKEY ROUTE.

The classic. Steep, varied, and the route most climbers picture when they think of Kilimanjaro.

WHY BOOK THIS ROUTE

  • Long acclimatizationEight days on mountain, climb-high-sleep-low at Lava Tower, the reason summit rates sit at 82%.
  • All five climate zonesRainforest, heath, alpine desert, arctic, summit. No other route shows you so much of the mountain.
  • Quiet first three daysWestern approach. You will not see the crowds until Barranco, by which point you have legs.
  • Shira plateau viewsA full day walking across an old caldera at 3,800 m, the most cinematic ground on Kilimanjaro.
  • Descent on the southUp the west, across the Shira Plateau, cross the southern face, and down through Mweka, you see two-thirds of the mountain, not a there-and-back trek.

HONEST DRAWBACKS

  • Not the cheapestEight days costs more than six. The Marangu hut route runs ~$900 less if budget is the deciding factor.
  • Crowds at BarrancoFrom day 4 your route merges with Machame traffic. Quieter routes exist (Northern Circuit, Rongai).
  • Steep summit dayThe summit approach via Stella Point is steeper (but shorter) than the routes that summit via Gillman's Point.
  • Limited solitudeLemosho is a popular route. If empty trails matter most, Northern Circuit is the upgrade.

TESTIMONIALS

Eight days felt like exactly the right amount. We summited slowly, and every single person in our group of nine made it to Uhuru. The guides paced us perfectly.

Hannah Reyes · 10 Day Lemosho · September 2025 · Brooklyn, NY

The Shira plateau day was unreal, wide-open volcanic plain at 3,800 m and we had it almost to ourselves. Worth the extra two days over a shorter route.

Marc & Eli Tewari · 10 Day Lemosho · February 2026 · London, UK

I picked the 9-day because of work. Tight but doable, the Lava Tower climb-high-sleep-low day genuinely saved my summit attempt. 100% recommend Peak Planet.
