Training for Altitude: What Actually Matters

You don't need to be an athlete to summit Kilimanjaro — but a few months of the right preparation changes everything.

The single most common question we hear is some version of "am I fit enough?" The honest answer: almost certainly, with a few months of consistent, specific preparation.

Altitude is the real challenge on Kilimanjaro, not raw fitness. That's why the routes we recommend build in generous acclimatization — and why steady hiking endurance beats gym strength every time.

Start walking hills with a loaded pack, build to back-to-back long days, and give yourself twelve weeks. Your guide team handles the rest on the mountain.
