Do I Need Travel insurance to Climb Kilimanjaro?

leg in a cast

Travel insurance is mandatory to climb Kilimanjaro with Peak Planet.

The reason we require insurance is so that our clients are protected from unexpected events or costs that may arise before, during or after your trip.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Trip Cancellation and Interruption

Though no one plans to cancel a trip when it is booked, things do happen that force a person to reconsider their travel. Sometimes things arise while clients are traveling.

Below are examples of things that can happen.

  • Loss of employment
  • Missed, delayed, and canceled flights
  • Lost or delayed luggage
  • Illness or injury, before or during your trip
  • Death in the family
  • Pregnancy
  • Civil unrest
  • War
  • Terrorism
  • Epidemic
  • Forces of nature
  • Government policy change

Travel insurance covers expenses if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. This includes climb costs, safari costs, Zanzibar trips, and all other costs related to hotel rooms, transportation, etc. Some policies have an add-on option where you can cancel for any reason.

Lost, Stolen or Delayed Baggage

This component of travel insurance reimburses you for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and personal effects, including carry-on bags, passports and other belongings. Lost baggage includes events like losing your luggage between your cab ride and the airport, between connections, or even at the destination hotel. Most policies also pay claims for baggage delays, so that travelers can replace items they need immediately when they arrive at their destination.

Emergency Evacuation and Medical

Kilimanjaro Search & Rescue

We enroll all of our clients with AMREF Flying Doctors, who operate helicopter evacuation services for Mount Kilimanjaro. This service is only available to clients with valid travel insurance.

What Should I Look for in Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters, medical and repatriation costs, and trip cancellation. We will verify that you have the appropriate insurance prior to the climb. You will be required to show proof of insurance. Please bring a photocopy of your policy to the trip briefing. You will also have to fill out this insurance form: https://peakplanet.com/travel-insurance-form/

No refunds are given for clients turned away due to failure to obtain coverage.

What Travel Insurance Companies Do You Recommend?

Our top recommendation for travel insurance is Travel Guard’s Essential Insurance Plan. Note that Travel Guard is only available to U.S. residents.

If you are outside the United States, we recommend World Nomads Explorer Plan.

If you choose an alternative travel insurance policy, please be sure that it covers trekking up to 6,000 meters.
